Tell us about yourselves…
We met when Matthew was over in Northern Ireland for work, I made the first move and I still joke about it today. We went pirate mini golfing on our first date and realised we were both really competitive and pretty much made for each other in a cliched way!
How did he / she propose?
Matthews job then transferred him out of the country to England, but before he was due to leave we planned a holiday to Iceland. He asked my parents permission in secret and borrowed a small ring box that belonged to my granny to make hiding the ring easier. We were told the best night for Northern Light activity was when we arrived so we were disappointed when our flight was delayed. The next day we went whale watching, saw nothing in 3 hours and nearly got hypothermia! We were both really disappointed and not holding out much hope for our Northern Lights tour later. So we got on the bus and travelled out to the countryside, once we got there the sky was just black and we waited, and waited. Eventually, there was a small green hue on the horizon and Matthew said we should get someone to take a photo of us in our winter gear. Then when they were about to take the photo he got down on one knee. It got even better because after he proposed the sky lit up and the light show was amazing.
Tell us about the planning of your wedding day…
A few days after the proposal I spotted the gold sequin Sorella Vita dresses I chose for my bridesmaids, and they inspired the theme of the whole wedding. I chose a gold glitter theme for flowers, centrepieces, jewellery etc even naming the tables after the theme ‘glitz’ & ‘sparkle’.
Where and when did you get married?
We got married at my grandparents’ church – Christ Church Ballynure and had an afternoon tea in the beautiful church hall. We then had coaches and wedding cars to take us to The Carriage Rooms at Montalto Estate near Ballynahinch which we found when we were looking at venues for our engagement dinner. It just blew us away. Matthew is known for being a bit forgetful so we picked 9/9 to make it easier!
Tell us about the outfits…
Coincidentally the bridesmaids’ dresses were by Sorella Vita of Australia and after trying on about 40 dresses I finally found my fairy godmother Dorothy from Bridal at Logan’s (Cloughmills) and she helped me choose my Essence of Australia gown.
The grooms’ party were kitted out by SD Kells in dark grey suits with gold checked waistcoats and gold ties with Matthews being iridescent gold.
The little details…
We used a florist that was recommended to us by friends (Carol Watson) and works from her home, she was so helpful and always available to discuss options incorporating our gold theme. I made all of our stationery myself from the invites and the menus to folding the napkins on the tables into hearts.
Our cake was made by The Wee Cake Shop in Banbridge. The cars were by David Andrew and were immaculate and so perfect for the day.
My hair on the day was by Gillian at Strands in Ballyclare and my Make-up was Beauty Secrets by Fiona in Doagh, I was so pleased with the overall look. The girls are fab!
Our photographer was Gemma G Photography and she did an excellent job making sure that we were all relaxed, she wasn’t overbearing and didn’t monopolise our time. Likewise Gary Collins our videographer from Eternal Sunshine Productions made us feel so relaxed and was very helpful in creating the perfect wedding video.
For entertainment, we had musicians – The Rare Aul Stuff and Rory Lavelle and they were amazing, our guests loved them.
Where did you go on Honeymoon?
We went on a 16-day tour of the west coast of America. We had an amazing time and made special memories!
What was the highlight of your wedding day?
My favourite memory is a toss-up between the group photograph we had looking down from the front balcony of The Carriage Rooms or the private bride and groom area by the lake of the venue, where only us and our photographer/videographer were allowed it was super romantic and nice to have some us time to reflect on our wedding so far.
Many thanks to Sarah & Matthew for sharing their wedding with us.
